Concrete Paths and Walkways Garden Design

Planning a pathway in a garden is a process of careful thoughtfulness. A well-planned pathway design using concrete pathways and walkways takes into account plant placement, plant growth patterns, and seasonal variation. We will assist in creating pathway(s) that support your overall landscape vision and do not detract from your planting choices.

A pathway in a garden can be located along an edge of a planting bed or directly through the planting bed itself. Pathways have the advantage of being curved to fit into informal gardens, while straight pathways better fit formal gardens. The material choice and finish on a pathway should complement your garden style; typically, a simple finish is sufficient when you want your plants to be the focal point.

When designing pathways, we also take into consideration the mature size of plants and ensure there is enough clearance between the pathway and any shrubs or trees. It’s acceptable for branches to overhang a pathway; however, the root system of the tree or shrub cannot damage the concrete. Planning properly ensures a harmonious relationship between your mature garden and your pathways.

As a contractor who has built multiple driveways in Redmond, we know what types of materials and installations will stand up to the climate variations in this area. Wet winters and temperature fluctuations require a correct installation technique. By hiring us to install your new concrete driveway, you will have a contractor who has experience building driveways that will perform well in our climate and will look good while they’re doing it.

Concrete Paths and Walkways Landscape Design

A walkway is a vital element in all aspects of landscape design. Concrete paths & walkways in landscape design help establish circulation on your property and provide visual structure. We collaborate with landscape designers or work directly with you to integrate your path(s) into a complete outdoor space.

Paths define spaces and direct the way you move through an area. In addition to separating lawn from plant beds, they can also help create “outdoor rooms” or draw attention to focal areas within your yard. Ultimately, your path network should appear deliberate, purposeful, and well-designed, rather than haphazardly placed.

Your materials and finishes should be consistent throughout your entire property. If your patio is made of stamped concrete, for example, your walkways could either match this finish or possibly complement it with a less ornate finish. Consistent finishing will yield professional results. Purposeful contrasting may also produce successful results when done thoughtfully.

Concrete Paths and Walkways Outdoor Design

Paths are an important part of connecting all the different elements of your outdoor space, as well as helping to determine how you interact with your entire property. When designing your concrete paths or walkways, consider the bigger picture of how you will be able to functionally use your yard. We design our paths based on how you really utilize your yard, rather than just placing them where they “look” good.

Think about your daily routine. Are there specific areas of your yard that you walk through every day? Which areas would benefit from having better access? Where do your guests naturally tend to go? A well-designed path should follow your pattern of movement, not force you into a path that makes no sense. The result is that your outdoor circulation will feel natural and effortless when you have properly designed your paths.

We’ve installed many concrete driveways around Redmond and understand the best practices in building driveways for our climate. We have very wet winters and large temperature fluctuations here, so we know the proper techniques for installing driveways that can withstand those types of weather conditions while also looking great.

Concrete Paths and Walkways Construction

To build quality concrete paths and walkways using established practices, we apply methods and techniques that create a durable and aesthetically pleasing walking path suitable for the local conditions in Redmond.

Site Preparation
In order to prepare the site for the path installation, we remove all sod and topsoil down to the required depth, and then we grade the area so that water drains off the base of the path as needed. After grading the base of the path area, we compact the base area to prevent settling of the base during future construction and to keep the path area as level as possible.

Base Installation
A crushed rock base provides both drainage and solid footing for the path. To provide this drainage and solid footing, we will be installing a 4-inch layer of base material on the bottom of the path, and we will also be compacting the base material as much as necessary. This is an important part of the path installation process, as it is what will give the path its long-term stability and durability.

Forming
The forms are what create the boundaries of the path and what create the proper elevation (grade) for the path. We put a lot of time into creating accurate forms for our path installations, because once the forms are built, you cannot make changes to them without damaging the finished product. Forms are especially important when creating curved paths, as flexible form materials need to be used, and the layout needs to be carefully planned out before beginning the path installation.

Reinforcement
Reinforcing the concrete with wire mesh helps to hold the concrete together and prevent cracking in the future. In order to maximize the benefit from reinforcing the concrete, the reinforcement needs to be placed at the correct depth within the concrete.

Concrete Placement and Finishing
Once the forms have been built, we pour the concrete into the forms and begin to spread and consolidate the concrete. Once the concrete has been spread and consolidated to the desired thickness, we will begin to work the surface to match your specified finish (broom texture, smooth, stamped, or exposed aggregate). As a finishing touch, we will cut control joints in the concrete at evenly spaced intervals to help manage cracking in the future.

Types of Concrete Walkways

Different walkways serve different purposes. Each walkway is designed with consideration of where it will be located, how much traffic will be using it, and what the user desires aesthetically. Understanding the options available for concrete walkways allows users to select an option best suited to their needs.

Front Entry Walkways: First Impressions Are Made at Front Entrances
Your front walkway is one of the first impressions that guests make when they visit your home. A front entry walkway is usually approximately 4-5 feet wide to allow two people to walk together. We can assist you with designing a front entry walkway that complements your home’s architectural style as well as provides a safe and reliable route for pedestrians to travel from the driveway or street to the entrance of your home. A front entry walkway may be either straight and formal or curved for a softer appeal. In addition to being functional, a front entry walkway is also a great opportunity to add decorative elements such as stamping, borders, or colored patterns. It is essential that the walkway flows with the surrounding landscaping and maintains clear sightlines and adequate drainage.

Concrete Garden Paths: Creating Intimate Passages Through Landscaping
Concrete garden paths are used to create meandering pathways through a variety of landscaping features. They can be created to wind through plantings or lead directly to specific points of interest. Typically, these paths are approximately 2-3 feet wide and allow for single-file walking without overpowering the garden space. We will work closely with you to ensure that your concrete garden paths are integrated into your overall landscape design. A curved pathway encourages the user to explore the area, whereas a straight path provides an efficient way to get from point A to point B. Depending on your preference, the finished concrete surface can receive a variety of decorative finishes that complement the plantings or remain simple to allow the plants to be the focal point.

Side Yard Access Paths: Providing Practical Access Routes to Side Yards
The side yards of many homes require practical access routes. Side yard access paths provide access to the front and rear of the property, allow utility personnel to access equipment, and provide routes to storage areas. Side yard paths are generally 3-4 feet wide and have simple finishes. While function is the primary concern for side yard paths, they should still appear to be intentionally placed and well-built.

Concrete Paths and Walkways Around House Foundations:
Concrete perimeter paths provide multiple functions. In addition to providing maintenance access to the foundation, these paths help to protect the landscaping from pedestrian traffic and can help with drainage. Perimeter paths keep mud off shoes and provide a clean transition from the house to the yard.
